Kayla Williams

Welcome! My name is Kayla Bridget Williams, and I am a freelance artist, illustrator, designer, author, and mother. Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember — I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil. As a self-taught artist, I draw inspiration from my father’s Nunatsiavut Inuit roots and my mixed Scottish and French heritage, blending culture, storytelling, and creativity into my work.

My great-grandmother, Bridget Jacque, was from Makkovik, and my great-grandfather, Henry John Williams (born Pottle), was from Woody Point, Nunatsiavut. My grandfather, Edgar Hamel, from Muddy Bay, and my grandmother, Elsie Williams of Cartwright, were also Nunatsiavut Inuit. I am ¼ Inuk and continue to embrace and learn from my family’s history and culture every day.

Founder of Big Land Design

I am the founder of Big Land Design, where I create and sell original paintings, prints, commissions, murals, and children’s book illustrations. My work has been featured on NTV’s Home Is Where the Art Is, CBC Radio, and community showcases across Labrador.

---Books & Publishing

am currently working with publishers to release my first two children’s books:

Aurora’s Journey — written and illustrated by me, to be published by Kegedonce Press, set for release in November 2025.

Labrador Skies — written and partially illustrated by me, to be published by Inhabit Media in Fall 2025.

In addition, I illustrated Water Warriors, a children’s book written by a group of Indigenous youth and published by SucSeed (2025).

I have also published Cozy North: A Labrador Life Coloring Book, a Labrador-inspired children’s coloring book for kids and adults, and continue to develop new stories and illustrations.

Teaching & Community Engagement

I love sharing my passion for art with others and have led workshops and paint nights for youth and adults across Labrador and Ontario. Some highlights include:

Teaching at the Labrador Creative Arts Festival and in schools such as Henry Gordon Academy in Cartwright.

Hosting workshops for You Go Girl in Goose Bay, Inspire Labrador at CNA, the Friendship Centre, and SIFN (Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation).

Leading sessions with the Military Family Resource Centre, the Mary May Healing Centre, and the FFtnl (French Community of Newfoundland and Labrador).

Creating public murals for the College of the North Atlantic, 5 Wing Goose Bay, and local businesses including the Royal Inn hotel and Mamattuk restaurant.

Participating in local craft fairs and expos, continuing my family’s long tradition of community creativity.
